For the past decade or so, Akeneo was the default answer to the question "which PIM?". If a company grew to the point where the store admin panel was no longer enough to manage the catalog - Akeneo landed on the shortlist as the obvious candidate.
Today, that answer is less obvious. Not because Akeneo suddenly became bad. Because the landscape changed - and there is a concrete reason why I am now starting implementations on UnoPIM instead.
Before I get to the comparison: I am not here to sell you one solution. There are situations where Akeneo still makes sense. I will tell you when - and it will be the only honest take you will find on this topic written by someone who has no interest in selling licenses for either of these products.
The elephant in the room: what is happening with Akeneo Community Edition
Before we compare the systems, I need to say this directly - because I see a lot of content online that heavily misrepresents it.
Akeneo CE is not formally "end of life". Releases are still appearing on GitHub - most recently 2026-2 with PHP 8.3. Commits are alive.
What actually happened is more subtle and strategically more important: Akeneo as a company has stopped betting on CE as its product. CEO Fred de Gombert announced a full pivot to SaaS (Serenity). Bundles dedicated to Community Edition disappeared from the marketplace. New features, AI, integrations - all of that goes to paid SaaS.
For a company implementing Akeneo CE today and planning to run on it for 3-5 years - this is a serious signal. Not a deadline, but a direction. And that is enough to ask: in 2026, should I start a new project on technology its creator is slowly walking away from?
The technology foundation: where the cost difference comes from
This is something decision-makers often do not know, yet it has a direct impact on the invoice.
Akeneo = Symfony. A solid, enterprise framework. But a niche one from a labor market perspective - especially in Poland. A good Symfony architect has a full schedule and can prove it with their rate. On top of that, Akeneo's architecture requires a relatively heavy stack: Elasticsearch (or OpenSearch), MySQL, PHP, queues, cron. You cannot run this sensibly on a low-end VPS.
UnoPIM = Laravel. This is not marketing - it is a fact with consequences. The Laravel developer market in Poland is one of the deepest in Europe. My implementation team at Web Berserker consists of people who write Laravel daily - that translates directly into speed and budget predictability. Infrastructure requirements are lower: Redis, MySQL, PHP 8.x - a stack hosted by practically every serious provider.
Does UnoPIM have fewer ready-made plugins than Akeneo? Yes. But writing custom integrations in Laravel is a very different conversation than Symfony - faster and cheaper.

When Akeneo still makes sense
I write this without irony: if you are a company with an implementation budget above 200-300k PLN, you have an in-house development team with Symfony knowledge, and you are integrating with systems for which Akeneo has mature, ready-made connectors - Akeneo Enterprise (Serenity) is a reasonable choice. You then have a product that someone is actively developing and maintaining.

Where UnoPIM wins for the Polish market
Marketplace and multichannel. My marketplace specialist (Allegro, Amazon, Erli) knows this pain from the inside: syncing attributes between PIM and marketplaces is not a "weekend integration". Real TCO calculation
"Free open-source" is not a complete answer to the question about cost. The real cost of a PIM is implementation and configuration, integrations (ERP, store, marketplaces), hosting and infrastructure, maintenance and development - and only then: the license.
With Akeneo Enterprise, the license cost enters as the dominant position from year one. With UnoPIM, that budget stays entirely for implementation and integrations - the things that actually accelerate your business.

Verdict
If you are starting a PIM project from scratch in 2026 and you are not a corporation with a license budget of tens of thousands of euros per year - UnoPIM is the more sensible architectural decision. Lower total cost of ownership, deeper developer market, active development, and a model of "pay for implementation, not for access to features".
